As the need for athletic trainers grows, Manchester University has responded with an entry-level Master of Athletic Training degree, one of fewer than 35 such programs in the nation. The program began in 2010 and has experienced continual success: 100 percent of the MAT graduates have passed the BOC examination on the first attempt.
Manchester’s MAT program is a full-time two-year program with certain undergraduate prerequisites (see MAT Admissions page). With a Manchester MAT degree, graduates will be eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination, which leads to the credential, ATC (certified athletic trainer). Manchester’s entry level master’s program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE.net).
Athletic trainers help prevent and treat injuries. They are often the first health-care professionals on the scene when injuries occur and must be trained to recognize, evaluate and assess injuries, and provide immediate care.
Society is increasingly interested in physical fitness and sports competition. And because athletic trainers play an important role in preventing injuries and containing health care costs, demand is projected to grow 37 percent between 2008 and 2018.*
At Manchester, Master of Athletic Training students get practical, hands-on experience that prepare them for jobs in secondary schools, colleges and universities, in hospitals and clinics, in fitness and recreation centers, in business and industry, and with professional sports teams. Pay varies, but the average annual salary for an athletic trainer with a master’s degree is $44,707.
Class sizes at Manchester are small, affording plenty of personal attention from highly trained, skilled faculty. Students get teaching experience in Manchester’s program, and they have immediate opportunities for internships with the University’s athletic teams.
Why an entry level master’s? Unlike programs geared for people with bachelor’s degrees in athletic training, Manchester’s program is designed for people whose bachelor’s degrees are in other disciplines. That enriches the classroom with a diversity of knowledge and a wider variety of backgrounds and experiences. It gives our graduates enhanced versatility in the job market. And it enriches the overall breadth of the athletic training profession.
